This is the first book in chronological order where we meet Hornblower. It must be noted that this was not the first book Forester published. The name might sound goofy to modern ears, but for a few generations, it has been synonymous with high seas adventure in the age of sail. Forester himself worked on the script for the 1951 film, which mines its plot from three Hornblower books (Beat to Quarters, Ship of the Line and Flying Colours). You can't have a list of sea fiction without including Horatio Hornblower. If you want to see Hornblower at his most messed up (and in some ways, IMO, his most interesting) read The Happy Return (aka Beat to Quarters).
